Brief History of Conneaut

Conneaut Area Historical Society.)


July 4, 1796, Moses Cleaveland and his party of surveyors first landed as they began their development work in the newly established Western Reserve of Connecticut. He and his men erected a log cabin near the point at which they landed and called it Port Independence, which is now Conneaut.

Conneaut Area Facts

One of the largest cities (area wise) in the largest county in Ohio.

Largest Northern Red Oak tree in Ohio.

Possibly, the oldest standing school building in Ohio; Built-1817 on Academy site; used as school-1834. Later, moved to present location on Mill Street

Three Major Railroads.

First mowing machine built at Tinker's Hollow in 1853.

George Hulett, born here, designed first Hulett Ore Unloader ever built at Conneaut Harbor in 1899.

Jim Williams, born here, world renowned cartoonist famous for comic "Out Our Way".

Sam Magill, born Mon. Twp., World War II hero, he and his platoon of 25 men captured 20,000 Germans.
