JOHN BROWN BOOKLETS

ACHS's historian Norma Waters announces the completion of the John Brown series of booklets. There are seven available, either as a set for $50.00 or at $8.00 per booklet (each approximately 80 pages). They cover the time period from when John Brown followed his children out to Kansas, then known as the "land of -milk and honey" attracting many Ashtabula county people, through the Harper's Ferry incident and culminating in the Civil War. "Each is a compilation of actual news articles written in the 1850's and makes very interesting reading", Norma says. The paper, The Ashtabula Sentinel, printed in Jefferson, was an unabashedly abolitionist newspaper at a time when Ashtabula County was openly involved with the Underground Railroad. with a constituency of 5000 Republican and 250 Democrats.
